Sami Yusuf makes it to Greek news

October 18, 2009 by ImanK

My first thought was how in the world did Sami Yusuf make it into one of the biggest newspapers in Greece?  But then on second thought, that’s some powerful stuff.  Islamic nasheed artists are not only making a global impact on Muslims but also mankind in general.  When looking at the big picture, this is a great step forward.

He is described as the biggest Muslim rock star of his generation. The songs of the young Sami Yusuf is not just words on paper, but lyrics that coordinate a role in the Muslims of his generation for their faith and their identity.

The 29 year old singer, songwriter and musician who writes his own songs and lives in Britain became known after September 11 for obvious reasons. The songs describe how hard it is to be a Muslim in today’s world and encourages his fellow man to be proud of it.

His first two albums, with bold rock sounds, sold since 2003 to now over 5 million CDs in the world and is seen by many as particularly charismatic.

This is very strange for the Greek readers to see a devoted religious person to make music and success, that is why it was posted at enet.
Imagine their curiosity when this religious pop star is Muslim!
Indeed Sami Yusef impessed me years ago, he is talented.

Is something wrong with my ears or did I just spot a lot of shirk in his lyrics?
Sorry for the straight forward comment, but to tell you the truth, though I respect this guy, I don’t think that he sets a good example.
May Allah grand him wisdom, so that he may learn from his mistakes.
    Astaghfirullah.

Hmm, I didn’t catch it. Which part are you refering to?

  5. Amir Abdullah on October 19th, 2009 5:55 am

The part where he…has lyrics in his song I guess. Well, at first, you’d think he refers to Allah ta’ala, but then he says “Need you more than ever
Ya Rasul ALLAH”, so he actually refers to Rasulullah (salallahu aleyhi wa salam). Here are the lyrics. May Allah forgive me if I made a mistake in this.

SAMI YUSUF – You Came To Me lyrics

    VERSE 1

You came to me in that hour of need
When I was so lost, so lonely
You came to me took my breath away

Showed me the right way, the way to lead

    BRIDGE 1

You filled my heart with love
    Showed me the light above
Now all I want Is to be with you

You are my One True love
    Taught me to never judge
Now all I want Is to be with you

    CHORUS (x2)

    VERSE 2

You came to me in a time of despair
I called on you, you were there
Without You what would my life mean?
To not know the unseen, the worlds between

    BRIDGE 2

    For you I’d sacrifice
For you I’d give my life
Anything, just to be with you

I feel so lost at times
By all the hurt and lies
Now all I want Is to be with you

    CHORUS (x2)

    MIDDLE 8

    Showed right from wrong
    Taught me to be strong
    Need you more than ever
    Ya Rasul ALLAH

    You came to me
    In that hour of need
    Need you more than ever
    Ya Rasul ALLAH

    BRIDGE 3

You filled my heart with love
    Showed me the light above
Now all I want is to be with you

You are my One True love
    Taught me to never judge
Now all I want Is to be with you

    CHORUS (currently X2)

    FINALE
    Showed right from wrong
    showed me right from wrong

P.S.: There is only one verse in the lyrics that actually refer to Allah, and that is “showed me the light above“.

From what I understood, the entire song is directed to Allah. As for the “Ya Rasoolullah” part, I don’t think it’s intended to direct worship to the messenger (saws) but yeah, now that I look at that saying there, it looks problematic.

Guys can you explain what is problematic?

salam to all brothers and sisters,
    my brother Amir abdullah,
sami yusef is famous muslim singer, i listened most of his albums, i never find words refer to shirk(polytheism) or like that, he only show how he love rasulallah(saw) ,when he said (ya rasulallah), does not mean he ask power from him,, or something else,,that based on his intention,,like if you say: o rasulallah Be interceding for me in day of judgment, it is wishes of every muslim, to win this place .
you can listen to his album(you came to me) again, and you will find what i said,,,, wassalam

    brother amir abdullah,
sami yusuf singing a lot of subjects,, for example about the greatness of Allah ,you find album( teacher),,,,,nasheed( the creator) he mean Allah power in his creatures, beauty of universe,,,,etc,,
when he sing Allahuma salli aala sayidina muhammad,,, in ,,song:(you came to me)
what does mean? obviously,,he ask Allah to pray upon the messenger muhammad(saw),,,so how did you judged brother sami by simple words?
anyway ,,this is my opinion wallah aalam(Allah knows)
