An interview of Ecumenical Patriarch for a Turkish newspaper

“[I am] determined to drive the case of Theological School of Halki to the European Court of Human Rights,” states to an interview for a Turkish newspaper, Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew.

Mr. Bartholomew repeats to “Haber Turk” that the patriarchy wishes to operate the school again as it used to reminding that the two latest ministers of Education of Turkey have stated that there is no legal obstacle for its re-opening.

“If by the end of the year there is not any development for the Halki issue then we will exhaust all legal measures in Turkey and go to the European Court,” he states.

In the same interview, Mr. Bartholomew reveals the content of a recent conversation with Turkish Prime Minister Rejeb Tayib Erdogan. Most likely he referred to what they discussed last August at Pringipos when Mr. Erdogan visited the Monastery of Saint George Koudounas and the wooden building of the orphanage where he was welcomed by the Patriarch.

At this discussion Mr. Bartholomew asked the re-opening of the Theological School and the reply of Mr. Erdogan was that “in Athens there is no mosque”.

The Ecumenical Patriarch replied to him that this is not his responsibility on this specific issue and that he would not object with the existence of a praying place for the Muslims that live in Athens.

“We paid the consequences of the Tukish-Greek relations and of Cypriot Issue. We are citizens of this country and we want our rights” said between others the Ecumenical Patriarch.

Δεν φανταζόταν, βέβαια, ότι ένα χρόνο πριν από τη σχεδιαζόμενη αποπεράτωση θα βρισκόταν και πάλι στην αρχή.

* Το φθινόπωρο η κυβέρνηση επρόκειτο να ασχοληθεί με το θέμα, όμως ξέσπασε το σκάνδαλο του Βατοπεδίου, το οποίο συμπαρέσυρε τα πάντα. Κανένας επίσης δεν είχε τη διάθεση να ασχοληθεί με το ζήτημα που ανέκυψε από τις αιτιάσεις του Πολεμικού Ναυτικού που έχει τις εγκαταστάσεις του προμηθευτικού οργανισμού του αλλά και επισκευαστική βάση μέσα στην έκταση που προοριζόταν για τζαμί.

* Ο χώρος καλύπτει δεκάδες στρέμματα και είναι χαρακτηρισμένος ως «ναυτικό οχυρό».

Το 2001 ολοκληρώθηκε μέσα σ’ αυτόν η κατασκευή του προμηθευτικού οργανισμού του Ναυτικού και ο χώρος που απομένει για το τέμενος είναι μόλις 16 στρέμματα. Ομως, σύμφωνα με την ισχύουσα νομοθεσία χρειάζονται τουλάχιστον 30 στρέμματα για να επιτραπεί η ανέγερση. Οι συνομιλίες για την παραχώρηση της έκτασης, που έκαναν οι αρμόδιοι των υπουργείων Παιδείας, Αμυνας και Οικονομικών με το Πολεμικό Ναυτικό, δεν απέδωσαν:

Τέλος το θέμα βρίσκεται στα συρτάρια του υπουργείου Παιδείας, ενώ χιλιάδες μουσουλμάνοι εξακολουθούν να ασκούν τα λατρευτικά τους καθήκοντα στα 60 παράνομα τεμένη της Αττικής.

* Σε εκκρεμότητα βρίσκεται η δημιουργία μουσουλμανικού νεκροταφείου στο Σχιστό, μετά την παραχώρηση από την Εκκλησία της Ελλάδος, το 2005, έκτασης 30 στρεμμάτων. Και εδώ οι περιπέτειες άρχισαν με τη διένεξη μεταξύ του δήμου Κερατσινίου, που διεκδικούσε την έκταση, και της Εκκλησίας.

Τελικά στα δικαστήρια κέρδισε η Εκκλησία και παραχώρησε το οικόπεδο στο Δημόσιο, το οποίο δεν έκανε ουδεμία άλλη ενέργεια προς την κατεύθυνση της κατασκευής του νεκροταφείου.

Οι ανάγκες όμως είναι επιτακτικές, καθώς οι σοροί των μουσουλμάνων που πεθαίνουν στην Αθήνα συχνά μεταφέρονται είτε στη Θράκη, όπου υπάρχουν μουσουλμανικά νεκροταφεία, είτε στη χώρα καταγωγής τους, με υπέρογκο κόστος, δύσκολο να καταβληθεί από οικονομικούς μετανάστες.

The Mosque of…Arta

All this fuss concerning the football field of Panathinakos at Votanikos area, covered the voices of others (thousands of Muslims) to whom the government had promised three years before the building of the mosque at the same area. It was when Marietta Giannakou, in order to withdraw the objections of archibishop Christodoulos for a mosque near the airport “Eleftherios Venizelos”, was announcing the decision about building it at a field that is owned by the Hellenic Navy at Votanikos and she was stating that in five years the thousands of Muslims that live in our country will have their own worship place…

She didn’t imagine of course that a year before the assuming completion, it would be back from the start.

This fall, the government was planning to work on this issue but the scandal of Vatopedio came out and pulled over everything. Also no one was in the mood to discuss the issue that came up from the Navy where have a provision and a repairing base in this area where the mosque was to be built.

In 2001 in this area an establishment of organization of provisions was completed and the remaining space for the mosque is just 16.000m2 . But according to the laws 30.000m2 are needed at least to allow the building. The negotiations for the bestowal of the area that made from the ministries of Education & Religions, Defense, and Finance with Navy, did not work out.

Lastly, the issue is in the drawer of the minister of Education, the time that thousands of Muslims remain and do their religious tasks at the 60 illegal mosques of Athens.

The Muslim Cemetery at Shisto area is still pending, after the bestowal of the Church of Greece, at 2005, a field of 30.000m2. Here also the troubles started with the conflict between the Municipality of Keratsini that claimed to own the area, and the Church of Greece.

Finally at courts the Church won and gave the field to the State, which did no other action towards the creation of the cemetery.

This is an emergency need, because the corpses of the Muslims that die in Athens usually are transferred to Thrace, where there are Muslim cemeteries, or to their origin country, with outrageous costs, which are difficult to be found by the financial immigrants.
